From 17th to 19th May 2023, the Bakhita Partnership for Education (BPE) held the “Keep-the-Girls in School” Indaba to explore the current state of girls’ education in Africa in the wake of the unprecedented school closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference focused on promoting the development of gender-responsive education systems and targeted actions to ensure girls’ continuity of learning, and retention in school and to transform education for the challenges and opportunities of our time.
The conference was designed for policymakers and practitioners in education, including those directly involved in the design and implementation of gender-responsive and transformative education systems. It brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including youth, BPE actors involved in the provision of education and education advocacy, government and IGO representatives, relevant UN organizations, corporations, civil society, and individuals in Africa and beyond.
